After gigging all around Sydney and Australia and gaining an impressive collection of accolades including, Triple j RAW Comedy National Finalist in 2017 and 2018 Sydney Comedy Festival Roadshow highlight Billy D’Arcy is ready to bring his debut hour of stand-up to the Sydney Comedy Festival in 2019.
We took some time to have a chat about being a comedian, just how funny his sister is and what we can expect from his Sydney Comedy Fest set.
Q: When and where was your first gig and how did it go?
My first gig was at the Roxbury hotel at an open mic and actually went pretty well. I still didn’t do another gig for the next two years though then finally got back into it.
Q: What do you love most about being a comedian?
The best part is getting the validation from the crowd that yes you are in fact, the king of games. It’s a feeling better then anything friends or family can provide.
Q: What can we expect from your debut Sydney Comedy Festival show
Plenty of riffing and hot bant, mostly friendly stuff. Get on board or I will have to turn on the crowd.
Q: Your best advice for someone wanting to pursue a career in comedy?
If you weren’t funny in high school or were ever bullied, then don’t even try. There’s too many nerds doing it already.
Q: The funniest person you know who’s not a comedian and why
The funniest person I know is definitely my sister. She is about to finish high school and is not doing well academically, whenever mum asks her whats she’s gonna do she just says she’s moving to Melbourne.
Q: Your hot tips for this year’s Sydney Comedy Festival?
Come and get around Billy for an hour of possibly too aggressive banter, as he attacks those who deserve it, including himself.
You can see Billy D’Arcy’s new hour of comedy Background Lad at The Enmore Theatre 4 – 5 May
