Comedy Store regular and 2019 FRESH artist, Gerard McGown, takes five for a quick chat before he makes his Sydney Comedy Festival debut with his show Gerard McGowan – Only Getting Funnier.
When and where was your first gig and how did it go?
It was Raw Comedy at the Sydney Comedy Store and I destroyed it but then proceeded to bomb for a year straight.
What do you love most about being a comedian?
I love having no one tell me what to say or what to do, few jobs in life where you don’t have to answer to anyone but yourself.
What can we expect from your debut Sydney Comedy Festival show?
It’s a great show, I’m really proud of it. I toured it nationally last year and it was nominated for the comedy award in Perth. You can expect surprises and a few stories about holding a grudge.
Your best advice for someone wanting to pursue a career in comedy?
Go to an open mic and just start, once you start your already doing it. How far it goes after that is up to you.
The funniest person you know who’s not a comedian and why?
Brenton Wells a bricklayer friend of mine.
Your hot tips for this year’s Sydney Comedy Festival?
You must go see Dan Rath, he’s so funny and so original.
