REVIEW: Jessica Adie is Doing Her Best - Sydney Fringe Comedy 2019
22 SEP 2019 FELICITY ANDERSON aka TWENTY ODD REVIEWER
Jessica Adie is doing her best, okay?! In this musical comedy up in the cozy Matchbox Theatre (at Factory Theatre), Jess treats audiences to a slew of whimsical tunes.
Originally from Queensland, Jess performs a short and sweet set that weaves song and story as she recounts her years living in Sydney. She doesn’t have a license, boyfriend, or proper job, but she does have a red piano, dextrous voice and a dry sense of humour.
“...and I’ve written a song about it.” Rather than assuming any complex piano work, Adie rather opts for more simplistic melodies for her jokes and stories. It works really well. She handles the juggling between spoken stories and singing with endearing casualness.
A highlight of the night is a momentary departure from the light and funny, in which Adie breaks from a song to perform a slam poem written in the wake of criticism of Queensland post election. Although brief, Adie is able create a light hearted, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, and enjoyable night out.
The show concludes with a group sing-along with instrumental participation. This show is comfortably itself, Adie has created a playful night out as her personality ensures laughs all round.
