Matty Finn’s brill joy of a comedy showcase unfolds with the best kind of audience-generated soundtrack – constant laughter, wide smiles and applause. Every note was deserved. Literally, you’ll never know what – or where – is going to pop up next – mainly from behind the stages main prop, a covered bench. Not always though – there are curtains, and a whole room, to play with – and a lot of characters and sketches coming out to play and perform. Finn spent 6 months working on the show and the results are mighty – part spaghetti western, part deep south Gothic and more; Starring mime, sound effects, music video-ing, puppets and a lot – a lot – of characters and a lot, lot more. All of it funny, charming and fun (all brought to life by the talented Mr Finn, sometimes multi-tasking-ly). Endlessly inventive and clever, it’s not only hilariously funny sketch, it also nails that hard to target spot where the characters (sometimes) know they are in a show – think the crisp wit of Arrested Development and The (original) Muppet Show or a less violent and non sweary Deadpool.. And there is a lot of good stuff with that – winking to the happily-along-for-the ride crowd, having fun with breaking the supposed rules of performance, puppets getting their masters into the act, music videos come to life, dance, song…. At the end of one of the happiest shows you’ll see, and an (understandably) happy & tired performer ran through an accurate list of comedy shows to see at The Sydney Fringe 2019. Everyone there – audience and reviewers, tonight and in the shows to come – will do what the modest performer did not – add “Amused & Confused” to that list, and right near the top.
